This project will produce short form narrative documentaries that explore central Florida history. These projects will involve either the participation or cooperation of local area partners. The format of the documentaries will be films or podcasts and will be distributed through the RICHES website. Our local area partners will also host screenings from time to time so people can gather in person to watch and discuss the film and podcast projects. The documentaries project will allow us to explore topics that have slipped through the cracks of public memory.
The Committee, a documentary produced by faculty and students from the UCF History department and UCF School of Visual Art and Design (SVAD), in partnership with the Burnett Honors College and the UCF Center for Distributed Learning (CDL), was honored with an Emmy Award in the "Documentary - Historical" category. The documentary chronicles how the Florida Legislative Investigation Committee (a.k.a. "The Johns Committee") persecuted LGBTQ communities throughout Florida in the 1950s and '60s, and how some of the effects of the committee's subversive activities are still felt today.
