An oral history interview with Freddie Maxwell. The interview was conducted by Sarah Boye at the Grand Avenue Neighborhood Center in Orlando, Florida, on April 28, 2025. Some of the topics covered include growing up in Orlando and family background, her father’s work as a lawn service owner and minister and her mother’s work, attending Holden Street Elementary and Jones High School, starting her beauty career while in high school, working in salons, opening her own shop, and becoming Revlon’s Florida educational director, playing in the Jones High School band, softball, and community activities, businesses in Parramore growing up including beauty salons, dry cleaners, and restaurants, the beauty shop experience in the past versus today, changes in beauty trends and adapting to new styles through her career, defining Parramore’s boundaries and describing her community, community challenges growing up including segregation and limited opportunities, women’s organizations, debutante balls, and local support networks, community leaders and businesses including the Sugar Bowl and Mr. Frazier’s restaurant, what community means to her and the importance of working together, and Parramore’s legacy and reflections on city leadership and community support.
